These were huge and mostly free article directories that held thousands of articles on nearly any topic you could imagine. The articles were fed into the article directories by hundreds or thousands of authors that could submit their articles to these directories for free.

I noticed that each of the articles in these article directories pulled up Google AdWords or better said Google AdSense Ads when you read them. "Ah ha!", I thought. "The article site owners are making their money from displaying the Google ads. O.K. but that's helping the owner of the article directory. But still this was no answer to the question, what was the benefit for the actual article authors...?

I kept digging...
